Even in the present day of less job opportunities & High competition, there is a world of high chances still remains under exploitation. That is none other than Fashion Industry, which ranks 4th in the largest production - industrial field. There was heavy investment in the nineties in this field due to huge unemployment & the depression of heavy industries including oil production.
The colourful & diversified world of textiles, co-existence with chief brands & persons, ability to forgee the future trends, gentlemanship that can be attained in the society are the major factors attracting the path to this field. The introduction of internet as well as television channels like Fashion TV warmed up this field. Beauty controls & fashion shows became inevitable factors.
Todays fashion technology is not just producing & designing textiles but financing, marketing & Planning are its parts. Modern Fashion technology is a very a large business based on I.T.
The topmost institution in the field of fashion technology in India which moulds professionals is the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The institute is formed in 1986 under the textiles department of Govt. of India has seven centres in Delhi, Bangolore, Chennai, Hydrabad, Gandhinagar, Kolkatta & Mumbai.
This institute offers under graduate courses of 4 years & post graduate courses of 2 years in design, mangement & technology. It follows 10+2+4 pattern. This courses is recognized by UGC & of international standard.
There are attempts to upgrade NIFT to a deemed university standard. It is changed the UG/PG Diploma holders would get Bachelors/Masters Degree respectively.
The under graduate courses offered here are:
Plus two is the minimum requirements for all these courses.
1. Design faculty:
1) Fashion & Apparel - (1) Fashion Design & Leather Design are courses under this section. The Fashion Design courses is offered in all NIFT centers & the Leather Design is only in New Delhi & Kolkatha. There are 40 seats in Delhi & Kolkatha & 30 seats each in other centers
2) Fashion & Textiles (1) Textile Design & (2) Kuitwear Design: Textile Design course is offered in Kolkatha & New Delhi - 40 & Hyderabad : 30. Kuitwear Design coutse is conducted in New Delhi, Kolkatha (40 seats each), Chennai & Mumbai (30 each).
3) Fashion & Communication : This course is conducted in New Delhi in 20 seats.
Fashin & Life Style Accessories : (1) Accessory Design is offered only in New Delhi (30 seats)
(2) Personal Products & Interior Accessories course is conducted in the NIFT centre of Banglore (20 seats)
(3) Footwear & Leather product is the course conducted only in Chennai in 20 seats. (4) Jewellery & Precious Products course is the speciality of Ganshi nagar NIFT centre with 20 seats. (5) Interior Products, Handicrafts, Mixmedia & Glass is the course provided in Hyderabad centre has 20 seats.
2. Technology Faculty
Those who passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics can apply for this course. Banglore Kolkatha, Chennai, Mumbai, Gandhinagar & Hyderabad are the centres of this course with 30 seats each.
There are PG courses in Management & Technology .
1) Management - Recognized Degree or Diploma in Accessory or Fashion Design or FIT from NIFT is the minimum requirement. The course is offered in New Delhi, Banglore & Hyderabad centres with 30 seats each.
2) Technology - This programme is available only in New Delhi centre in 30 seats. Minimum requirement is BE/BTech in Textiles/Apparel/Mechanical/Production/Engineering/Computer Information Technology.
Admission is through an all India entrance test usually in October every year. Those who passed in this test have to appear group discussion & interview also. The entrance test is conducted to three sections:

(1) General Ability Test (GAT) with a weightage of 25%
(2) Creative Ability Test (CAT) 35%
(3) Situational Test (20%)
(4) Group Discussion (10%)

2. Technology (under graduate & post graduate ) -
(1) General Ability Test (GAT) 30%
(2) Managerial Ability Test (MAT) 35%
(3) Situational Test 15%
(4) Group Discussion 10%
(5) Interview 10
3. Management
(1) General Ability Test (GAT) 30%
(2) Managerial Ability Test 35%

Managerial ability test includes logical ability, Environmental Awareness Test (about the surrounding), selecting the correct answer on the provided condition.
Creative ability Test includes Fashion Sketching or Designing, Colour Arrangement & Pencil Drawing or Illustration.
Fee for the first semester is Rs.33500/-. For the needed students, scholarships are arranged. Continuing education programmes like Fashion & Clothing Technology, Garment Export Merchandise Management, Fashion Retail Management, Certificate in Production Technology are also conducted.
